Clarity

Clarity

Clarity is one of the most important aspects of a diamond. It measures how clean the diamond is — meaning how many natural inclusions or imperfections exist inside the stone. In general, the cleaner the diamond, the higher the clarity grade and the higher the price.

Quick guide: Clarity grades range from IF / VVS (very clean) down to I3 (many inclusions). A well-cut diamond can also help inclusions appear less noticeable.

What clarity means in real life

Clarity is about what you can see inside the diamond. The goal is not always to buy the highest grade possible — it’s to choose a diamond that looks beautiful in normal viewing conditions while staying within your budget.

Smart buying: Many diamonds can be “eye-clean” (look clean to the naked eye) without needing the highest clarity grades.

Common market reality

Typical commercial quality diamonds often fall within the I1–I3 range (lower clarity). These diamonds are widely sold in retail and online stores, even when they are not represented that way. Many diamonds are marketed as “SI” quality, but labels and tags are not always a reliable source of truth.

When comparing diamonds, transparency matters. Independent grading and honest reporting are essential to ensure you are paying for what you are actually getting.
